Beginner Tip 03: Perfect Use of Fullbacks

This tip tells you how to achieve an offensive predominance with both your fullbacks.
(1) Begin with passing as a goalkeeper or center back – provided you are playing with a back four – to the left or right fullback. Sprint forward with the fullback in possession of the ball parallel to the sideline until the opponent tries a hold-up play.
(2) Now pass to the free midfield teammate and keep the ball within your line. Watch the fullback.
(3) Pass outside to the fullback sprinting along the sideline and towards the endline in the opponent’s half.

(4) The fullback gets the ball to the opponent’s penalty area or uses a low or middle cross to shoot the ball into it. This leads to an offensive predominance and higher chances for scoring goals.
Get on the training ground and try it!

PES 2012-Tip: Long Shots

In this part of our goal shot tips, we explain in detail how to successfully execute long shots.
Long shots are an excellent method if the opponent does not let you enter their penalty area. In this case, a powerful goal shot from a distance can be just the right thing to end a wearing defence fight with one play.
When you have taken the lead, the opponent has to act and loosen their defence in order to play forward better.
The long shot is a must in every PES player’s repertoire, making their attacks stay unpredictable.
Which players are suitable for long shots?
Nearly any player with good shot power and stats is suited for this job, but usually midfielders are the perfect candidates as designated long shot specialists in your team.

They are often automatically in promising shot positions on the field if the play forward has got stuck around the opponent’s penalty box.
A low pass from the wings to one of the advancing midfield players often creates a good starting point for an unexpected strong shot.
Take a short look at you formation menu before the start of the match to see which of your midfield players are best suited. Shot power and accuracy are of prime importance, although these stats do not have to be at a striker level.

Player stats influence your accuracy
A player with a shot power of 80 points (the more, the better) and an accuracy of more than 70 points would be a good choice. Some midfielders even have the “Long Shot” Special Ability that raises their chance to precisely shoot from a distance.
Heed these simple rules for executing long shots:
1) Shots from distances of more than 35 meters are not recommended, unless the opponent keeper is leaving his goal. Distances of around 30 meters are no problem for experienced players, but they should take a short run-up before shooting.
2) If you would like to shoot while sprinting, you can use the feature “Greater Distance Between Ball Touches” (additionally press the “Special Moves” button – i.e. R2 or RT – while sprinting and steer slightly diagonally to your running direction) to make room for a run-up.
3) Depending on the distance, the shot power gauge should be charged to at least a third, but not exceed two thirds. It is important not to shoot to low, since the ball slows down with every ground contact, making it easier to intercept.
4) A pass or a low feed to the advancing player makes it easy to receive the pass. If possible, the ball should be directed towards the shot-taker:

PES 2012 Tip: Teammate Control

In the our goal shot tip, we explain in detail how to include your teammates in your offensive play.
Additional passing options and outnumbering the opponent in their half are the most important results, often leading to a successful goal shot.
While assembling these tips and tricks, we asked several PES League players which feature they often use – “Teammate Control Assisted” or “Teammate Control Manual” was a frequent answer.
How does the Teammate Control work?
Since PES 2012, you can also control off-the-ball players while attacking and encourage them to run towards free space on the field. In the button configuration menu, you can chose between to variations of the Teammate Control: “Assisted” and “Manual”.

– For most players, the assisted mode should already be a gain to their offensive play, since it lets them easily and quickly create additional attacking options.
– The manual version of this feature enables maximum control over the chosen teammate, although it is a bit harder to master.

Teammate Control “Assisted”

When using the assisted version, you simply hold the right analog stick towards the player you want to include in the attack and press the right stick.
The player will now start a sprint into free space, offering another passing option. The clear advantage: You are no longer at the mercy of the AI’s passivity and decide for yourself when your teammate actively participates in the offensive.

If you take the middle path and see that the opponent’s fullback is in a bad position, you can hold the stick towards the midfielder running along the left sideline for example. Activate him and watch how your teammate creates space to get into a promising position for a high pass.
But if your attack comes to a standstill on the wing, use the right stick to let a central midfielder take part in the offensive play in the middle of the pitch in order to slip out of the defender’s grip.
In general, you can send any number of players forward and have access to varied options.

Teammate Control “Manual”

For users of the manual Teammate Control, they become even more varied. As before, use the right stick to chose your desired player, press the stick, and as long as you do not let go of it or move it to the neutral middle position again, you directly control the second player.

This variant needs some practice, but enables you to send your teammates in any direction instead of letting them simply rush towards the goal.
You can also let them run towards each other, diagonally to your direction or even back, making your play much more unpredictable and flexible.
Please note: We recommend practising the assisted and manual versions of the Teammate Control in Free Training and choose the one you like most. Your opponents will be surprised, since this feature really gives you an ace up your sleeve.

PES 2012 Tip: 1-on-1 Situations

We will explain in detail how to master 1-on-1 situations from a forward’s as well as a goalkeeper’s perspective.

What can you do if you face the goalkeeper alone? What can you do if a forward faces you as goalkeeper alone? Our tutorial gives you valuable tips for mastering such situations.
From a forward’s perspective

If you are in possession of the ball and run towards the goalkeeper alone, you have several options. It is important to make your decision early enough.

– If the goalie stays on the line or has not met you halfway yet, forwards with good shot stats should best take a “controlled shot” (keep R2 or RT pressed while your shot gauge is charged) at about the penalty line or shortly after entering the penalty area.
Very fast and agile players who are good at dribbling can get past the goalkeeper by rushing out with a speed burst (keep R2/RT pressed and press R1 or RB at the right moment) to shoot the ball into the empty goal.
– Another deft choice is the chip shot that good shot-takers have ready as a rather reliable option. If your are inside the penalty area and the keeper runs towards you, pull L1/LB shortly before he reaches you, and charge the shot gauge to at about a half. In PES 2012, these kinds of chip shots miss the goal not quite as often as they did in previous versions.
The trajectory of the ball – which even flies a bit faster than before – is now a slight curve. These chip shots are just high enough to pass over a keeper jumping diagonally. If you pull R2/RT after charging the shot gauge, the player shoots even softer and lower. Just try it in the training mode.
– Another frequently chosen option is taking the goalie for a ride with a shot feint: Charge the shot gauge and keep the pass button pressed to make the player cancel the shot. You can also tell him to change his orientation by pressing the left Stick into the desired direction. This way, you can position the ball past the defeated goalkeeper.
You can also dribble towards the goalie, move far to the left or right when it is just about time and shoot the ball into the gap between the keeper and the goal. Keep in mind, though, that you have to hit the goal from a rather acute angle. If a player has as a weak left or right foot, the shot will not succeed.

From a goalkeeper’s perspective

As a goalkeeper, the 1-on-1 is quite nerve-racking. You have to correctly discern the situation and decide to leave the goal to rush towards the player or shorten the attacker’s shot angle, or to stay inside and let your teammates hold up the play.
You have to decide on one of these choices, since the “golden mean” makes you vulnerable to nearly any of the attacker’s options.
From time to time, you can confuse an attacker by not rushing out of the goal as expected. However, against less agile and accurate players, it is often best to jump towards the ball and the attacker.

f – like described above – a player dribbles towards the left or right to open a gap between you and the goal, you have to try to reduce it as fast as possible.
You can also control your goalkeeper manually to clear the 1-on-1 situation. To do this, press L1 + R3 (PS3) or LB and press the right Stick (Xbox 360) to get full control over your goalie.

Most PES players will be surprised by this move! Just try the manual control on the training ground or in test matches. Mastering it gives you a clear advantage in 1-on-1 situations!

PES 2012 Tip: Everything you need to know about corners

Set pieces like corners have already helped many players turn the page in apparently lost matches.
In fact, well-trained corners belong to every good PES player’s repertoire, since – if executed perfectly – they are quite hard to defend against.
Before we start with our explanation, it should not be left unmentioned that the choice of the shot taker already has a strong effect on the result:

Choosing the shot taker
Using the “Set Pieces” feature in the Game Plan menu, you can get a good overview of players who are suitable shot takers. The game displays a two-digit value to show how good the selected player is able to take the corner.
Please note that these stats can drastically vary for left or right corners. You should specify your best shot takers in the Formation menu before the match. If your best corner taker is also your most dangerous header player, do not let him make the corner kick because you will need him in the center.
Many PES players do not know that you can make your tall full and center backs – who are often good at headers – join the attack. Again, open the Game Plan menu, go to the “Set Pieces” sub menu and use the “Players to Join Attack” feature.

Strong left or right foot – a decisive question
You should also take into consideration if you would like to take the corner spinning towards the goal or away from it. The players always use their strong foot for set pieces, so a player with a strong right foot will always make a corner kick from the right side that spins away from the goal.

Different swerve and shot variations
Based on three exemplary values, the graphic visualizes how charging the shot power gauge affects the range of a corner kick. To safely get the ball to the first goal post, a charge below 50 percent is sufficient.

You can intensify the swerve of the ball (players with a strong left foot let it spin to the right, players with a strong right foot let it spin to the left) by holding the stick in the desired direction when the shot power gauge has been charged.
If you push the stick forward, the result will be a lower and harder corner kick. If you would like to get the leather into the danger zone on the ground, pull the stick backward.
By additionally holding R2 / RT, you get a delicate variation with a more pronounced trajectory. If you like, you can also play a short pass to a team member near the shot taker. To do so, press the Cross / A button.
As a new feature in PES 2012, you can let the AI take the corner while you get into position in the penalty area instead. Use the right stick to choose the player you would like to make the corner kick and run into free space with the left stick. A press of the cross button lets your corner specialist shoot the ball into the penalty area.
