PES 2012 Tip: Everything you need to know about corners
Set pieces like corners have already helped many players turn the page in apparently lost matches.
In fact, well-trained corners belong to every good PES player’s repertoire, since – if executed perfectly – they are quite hard to defend against.
Before we start with our explanation, it should not be left unmentioned that the choice of the shot taker already has a strong effect on the result:
Choosing the shot taker
Using the “Set Pieces” feature in the Game Plan menu, you can get a good overview of players who are suitable shot takers. The game displays a two-digit value to show how good the selected player is able to take the corner.
Please note that these stats can drastically vary for left or right corners. You should specify your best shot takers in the Formation menu before the match. If your best corner taker is also your most dangerous header player, do not let him make the corner kick because you will need him in the center.
Many PES players do not know that you can make your tall full and center backs – who are often good at headers – join the attack. Again, open the Game Plan menu, go to the “Set Pieces” sub menu and use the “Players to Join Attack” feature.
Strong left or right foot – a decisive question
You should also take into consideration if you would like to take the corner spinning towards the goal or away from it. The players always use their strong foot for set pieces, so a player with a strong right foot will always make a corner kick from the right side that spins away from the goal.
Different swerve and shot variations
Based on three exemplary values, the graphic visualizes how charging the shot power gauge affects the range of a corner kick. To safely get the ball to the first goal post, a charge below 50 percent is sufficient.
You can intensify the swerve of the ball (players with a strong left foot let it spin to the right, players with a strong right foot let it spin to the left) by holding the stick in the desired direction when the shot power gauge has been charged.
If you push the stick forward, the result will be a lower and harder corner kick. If you would like to get the leather into the danger zone on the ground, pull the stick backward.
By additionally holding R2 / RT, you get a delicate variation with a more pronounced trajectory. If you like, you can also play a short pass to a team member near the shot taker. To do so, press the Cross / A button.
As a new feature in PES 2012, you can let the AI take the corner while you get into position in the penalty area instead. Use the right stick to choose the player you would like to make the corner kick and run into free space with the left stick. A press of the cross button lets your corner specialist shoot the ball into the penalty area.
